Just in: The Bokhcha Collection!
In the olden times, back when suitcases 🧳 weren’t yet a thing, people would carry a bunch of stuff on their back, using one-piece wrappers named “bohça.” (Turkish spelling, pronounced “bohkcha”)
Since the Ottoman days, women went from house to house, merchendising some other women everything from bedsheets to jewelry in these bokhcha. We call them “bohçacı kadın,” in other words, a “woman with a bokhcha.” These women were the entrepreneurs of their times (some very well might still exist) and the bokhcha contains so many surprises - you never know what’s going to come out of it!
The Bokhcha Collection by Atelier Ayana is an ongoing curation of limited works by local artisans around the world. Each purchase from the Bokhcha Collection helps us support artisan jewelry-makers near and far.
The Pre-Fall 2022 Bokhcha Collection features jewelry artists from Turkey. Specifically: Istanbul, Bodrum and Datça. They have helped inspire my next collection: #winterinbodrum.
